Dhrubaa Mukherjee

Dhrubaa Mukherjee was born and raised in Kolkata, India, a culturally diverse community that fostered her appreciation for music, theater, films, and literature. Not long after graduating from Calcutta University, with a Master’s in English, she moved to Texas to get a Ph.D. in Literature and Liberal Arts with a focus on South Asian Cinema and Culture. She started What’s Wrong With 90s Bollywood to use her background in Film theory to facilitate important conversations surrounding issues of caste, class, religion, and gender as they pertain to South Asian films. Even though this website attempts sociopolitical reviews of many important 90s films to expose the repeating problematic tropes and trends that we have ignored and excused over the years, it’s not limited to only 90s films. The 90s are instead treated as an important transition period in Indian cinema owing to economic liberalization that changed the industry forever and influenced how we consume film entertainment.

Dhrubaa lives in New York and also loves cooking/baking and blogging about food.
